Who wants to pay for something that you can do yourself for free? Before you demo your kitchen, it’s possible you could save a big chunk of change with some stylistic improvements. Aside from painting or re-staining your cabinets, what also dates them is their hardware. So instead of investing hundreds, invest under $100.

Measuring For New Hardware

With each range of hardware designs and styles comes different measurements between screws. Obviously, you don’t want to fall in LOVE with the perfect new set of hardware that you can’t live without, only to get home and realize that the old screw holes are completely uncovered- staring you right in the face.
In order to get your shopping right the first time, use a tape measure to measure the precise length between screws. Measure, with your measuring tape, from the center of the first screw hole to the center of the second. You can also remove one of your existing cabinet handles and take it to the store with you.

Size Exceptions

Take a look at the picture above. A new handle such as this one can hide old screw holes without having to match them. You’ll still want to measure the distance between your old screw holes before heading out for a shopping trip.

Hinges

Hinges can be difficult to shop for, so instead of removing all of your cabinets’ hinges before finding replacements, remove one and take it with you while you shop at your local hardware store for new ones. Naturally, if your hinges are not seen from the outside and are hidden within your cabinets, you can leave them.

Picking the Right Style

As I’m sure you’d agree, not all kitchens are fit for streamlined, modern hardware, especially a traditional kitchen.
Stick with the room’s overall style. Even though you’re updating your kitchen’s look you still need to keep within its style parameters.
