Why You Should Declutter and How to Get Started

We think it’s safe to say that de-cluttering isn’t always at the top of our priority list. After all, if it was we wouldn’t have any clutter to begin with. For all you non neat freaks, decluttering has probably been on your to-do list for quite a while now. We know it’s disappointing to hear this, but ignoring the growing mounds that were once so easy to step over doesn’t make them go away. We’ve all tried. It doesn’t work (sigh).

So, the only other option for conquering your clutter is to face it head on!

Still not excited to dive in and make those piles of stuff disappear? What if we told you that decluttering your house can actually make you happier and healthier? A UCLA study found a link between clutter and depression. The results of the study showed that the majority of female homeowners with a higher density of household objects had higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

Apparently, most women associate a tidy home with a successful and happy family and the more clutter that piles up, the more anxious they (we) become.

But if it’s not natural for you to be tidy and organized how do you change your approach to clutter? Well, you start by setting goals; small, simple and reachable goals.

Conquer one room a week. For the entire week, every time you walk through the room pick up five things and put them away. Do this several times throughout the day and you’ll be surprised at how much cleaner and more organized the room is once the week is up. Each week moved to a new room and stick to the same goal of five items at a time.

It’s a daunting task, but the end result has many benefits. Imagine your home completely clutter free. It’s attainable! Now it’s time to get started!
